My Therapeutic Approach — Therapy in Cumming & Sandy Springs, GA
Thoughtful, Evidence-Based, and Body-Centered Therapy
Therapy with Mary Elizabeth Burns, LPC is designed to go beyond surface-level solutions. Each client brings a unique combination of experiences, challenges, and goals, and our work is carefully tailored to meet you where you are. By integrating evidence-based practices with somatic and body-centered approaches, we address both the mind and body, helping you move past patterns that no longer serve you and creating lasting change that supports clarity, resilience, and emotional balance.
The Modalities I Use
Multiple approaches are incorporated, each selected for its ability to address specific challenges.
Somatic therapy helps process trauma and emotional experiences held in the body, reducing tension and increasing self-awareness.
Breathwork supports nervous system regulation, emotional clarity, and stress reduction.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) challenges unhelpful thought patterns, supports behavioral change, and builds practical coping strategies.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) integrates mindfulness practices with strategies for managing emotions, tolerating distress, and improving relationships. This approach is particularly effective for individuals navigating eating disorders or borderline personality disorder, helping them increase self-awareness, reduce reactive or self-sabotaging behaviors, and develop practical skills for sustaining emotional balance and healthier interactions.
Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT) is designed for individuals who are highly controlled or perfectionistic. It helps reduce overcontrol, increase flexibility, and build healthier relational and emotional patterns, particularly for clients navigating interpersonal challenges, trauma, or high internal pressure.
These tools are applied in a personalized way, combining practical strategies with deeper exploration of how emotions, thoughts, and the body interact.
Why Working With Both Mind and Body Matters
Many therapeutic challenges, including trauma, narcissistic abuse, ADHD, perfectionism, and eating or body image concerns, involve both cognitive and physiological patterns. By addressing both, clients often experience:
- greater emotional regulation and stability
- increased self-trust and confidence
- improved clarity in decision-making and relationships
- relief from long-standing patterns of anxiety, rumination, or self-criticism
- sustainable change that supports daily life, not just short-term relief
